Description
Glycerol Phenylbutyrate (Ravicti) is a nitrogen-binding medication used to treat urea cycle disorders (UCDs) — rare genetic conditions in which the body cannot properly remove ammonia from the bloodstream. It works by helping the body eliminate excess nitrogen through an alternative pathway, thereby reducing toxic ammonia levels.
Ravicti is an oral liquid that contains glycerol phenylbutyrate, which the body converts to phenylacetate, a compound that combines with glutamine to form phenylacetylglutamine, excreted in urine. This process helps prevent the buildup of ammonia, protecting the brain and other organs.
